October 06: Free But Not Cheap

Daily Word:

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works. (Ephesians 2)

In the summer of 1990, I married a United States citizen and came to live in the United States. However, I discovered quickly that life here is totally different from life in the Philippines.

One of my adjustments was to receiving enormous amounts of mail. This “junk mail” fascinated me. A common eye-catcher was notices including the word FREE. Offers of free things were made in television advertisements and other mass media, too. But I found that these gifts all have one common characteristic: they are cheap, token items.

However, there is one free thing I know that is not cheap. It is our salvation in and through God. It is free, but it is not cheap because the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ purchased our salvation. God’s salvation is free to all people, regardless of race, age, background, culture, or language. Whoever we are, God’s salvation is available to each of us.

Prayer:

God, thank you for the salvation you give us. Help us to be living testimonies of your grace to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
